A Furr-bulous Family!

A Furr-bulous Family!
  • Carolina Romero

We have kicked off National Pit Bull Awareness Month with a post earlier this week about our beloved block heads, so for today I thought I would share some information about the faces behind the Furr-bulous family!  I often think back to how we all came together; some things are just too strong to be coincidences… right?

Our story actually begins with me… In 2015 I was going through a very difficult time.  I was afraid, lonely, lacking confidence in myself and was uncertain that I deserved happiness in my life.  I knew I needed to make a drastic change, to find purpose again, and I knew that bringing a dog into my home was just what I needed.  As fate would have it, my ‘Cielito Lindo’ was also in need of a drastic change in her life and with the help of the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington D.C., our paths collided; and as they say, “the rest was history.”

Truth be told, I had no idea what lay in store for us.  I had never “owned” a pit bull before and I had no idea of the reputation that loomed overtop of their heads like a dark storm cloud.  And although not much is known about Cielo’s past, it was clear that she had most likely been abused, bred for puppies, and then abandoned.  Like me, she was afraid, anxious and in need of someone. Despite what everyone told me about “those kinds of dogs,” I poured myself into being what she needed and together we helped each other heal.  She is the reason I learned to smile again.

Fast forward to when I met my now fiance, Justin.  We connected over our love of dogs. But Cielo was my entire world and being the anxious dog that she is, she was very uncertain of strangers.  Especially men. And yet from the moment she met Justin and his dog, Dyno, there was an instant connection. What chance did we stand against kismet?  From that moment, our Furr-bulous family emerged.

We have since added Lily, another pit bull-mix, to our family.  It has been through our experiences with Cielo and Lily that we have learned the true need for advocacy in changing the narrative that surrounds pit bull-type dogs and educating the public on the importance of fostering and adopting.  Justin and I strongly believe that adoption should be the only choice when so many dogs are currently in need of homes. We have seen firsthand what this stereotype does to bully breeds and it is statistically proven that they are the most common victims of animal cruelty, neglect and discrimination.

Through Furr-bulous, we hope to highlight how truly wonderful this breed is.  Our mission is to educate, advocate and through our products, help to soften their image to make them more approachable and in turn allow people to get to know their loving natures.  We started this company not simply because we love dogs, but because we firmly believe that every dog deserves a furr-ever home. As such, we also donate a portion of our proceeds each month to various non-profits because our mission is simple:  to change the perception of these so-called dangerous dogs by helping each one find a loving home; one cute dog accessory and donation at a time.
